How to flush your DNS cache and Register your DNS

This explains how to FlushDNS and RegisterDNS via the command prompt (cmd). This is typically used when having slight DNS issues or resolving DNS name / HOST names rather then using IP.

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Based Computer
  1. Step 1

On your Windows Computer go to Start and select Run

  2. Step 2

Once the Run dialog box appears type in cmd and click OK or hit the Enter Key

  3. Step 3

Now that the command prompt is open type
    ipconfig /flushdns
Hit the Enter Key on your Keyboard for the command to apply and you will get the following information letting you know the command has successfully ran.

    Windows IP Configuration
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

Your DNS cache has now been flushed. This purges the DNS Resolver cache.

  4. Step 4

In the same or different Command Prompt Window to Register your DNS do the following.

Now that the command prompt is open type
    ipconfig /registerdns
Hit the Enter Key on your Keyboard for the command to apply and you will get the following information letting you know the command has successfully ran.

    Windows IP Configuration
Registration of the DNS resource records for all adapters of this computer has been initiated. Any errors will be reported in the Event Viewer in 15 minutes.

This refreshes all the DHCP leases and re-registers DNS names.
